Tale about the tulip, the mob cap and the wooden shoes

(short extract)

In a Dutch fishing village lived a beautiful girl who was vain and proud. She decided to get married to a fisherman but only if he could fulfill her three wishes.

A smart fisherman arrived and the girl’s first wish was to have a flower in her garden which nobody had ever seen before. The fisherman sailed away with his boat and at night he carved a flower from wood. When he was ready he plunged it into the sea and the wooden flower got vivid and turned into a tulip. The tulip got its colours from the sun and the sea.

The second wish was to have a head cap that no one else had. The fisherman went out to find it at once he saw a beautiful one on an old woman’s head. The old woman was good-at heart and gave her cap to the fisherman. And yes, the girl liked the funny mob cap.

The third wish was to have a pair of shoes that produced a rapping sound that could be heard on the street. The fisherman went in his boat to the sea again and he carved the shoes from wood. The girl liked the wooden shoes very much.

Finally they got married, and in the village all the other girls copied the mob cap and the wooden shoes and asked for the tulip plants. From this time on the tulip, the mob cap and the wooden shoes became the symbols of Holland.
